Sleep Apnea and Alcohol

Rancho Cucamonga’s Dr. Jia Y. Lee is a dentist with training in sleep medicine. What this means is that he can provide custom-fitted oral appliances for people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). But we’re also a practice that believes in prevention, which is why we want our patients to be aware of the connection between sleep apnea and alcohol. People are often unaware that they have sleep apnea because it doesn’t cause them to fully wake up, but only to get less restful sleep as their body struggles for air. In people with OSA, the soft tissues of the throat sag, causing them to move their jaws in an attempt to get their airways clear. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant, making it likelier that people who drink it will have obstructed breathing, even if they do not normally have OSA. An increased likelihood of obstructed breathing is not the only way alcohol disrupts sleep. It also causes the drinker to take longer to wake up if they stop breathing, which dangerously decreases t

Bruxism

Do you ever wake up from a night’s sleep with sore teeth and jaws? You could be grinding your teeth. The medical term for occasional teeth grinding is called bruxism and although this condition does not usually cause harm, when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis the teeth can be damaged and other oral health complications can arise. At the practice of Dr. Jia Y. Lee, DDS we offer night guards to prevent this from happening and to provide you with relief. Stress, anxiety, smoking, heavy alcohol, caffeine, depression and sleep disorders are all possible causes of teeth grinding. Treatment for teeth grinding depends on the cause. In some cases, chronic teeth grinding can result in fracturing, loosening or loss of teeth. The purpose of a night guard is to protect your teeth and jaws. If you require a night guard, Dr. Jia Y. Lee, DDS, will custom make one just for you. If you have questions or concerns regarding bruxism, please give us a call. To learn more about the services provided

Back to School Check-Ups

You don’t want toothaches to disrupt your child’s school year. Dentists recommend that people of all ages get biannual cleanings, but if your child is past due, now is the time for a check-up. When a new tooth first erupts through the gum line, it may be sensitive for a few days. But for the most part, a toothache indicates that something is wrong and should be taken seriously. Children are the age-group that is likeliest to have enamel infections (caries), but long-term gum disease could also be the first hint of a disease such as diabetes. Even a mere dental infection could have drastic consequences for a child, including the worse mood and decreased cognitive function that comes from lost sleep and a reluctance to eat. In young children, toothaches can also delay speech development. A check-up at our Rancho Cucamonga office will also allow us to plan long-term care. We will be able to determine whether your child will need dental extractions or orthodontic work, such as our Invisali

Oral Pathology

Pathology is defined as the scientific study of the nature of a disease and its causes, processes, development, and consequences. Oral pathology is the specialty that identifies and treats diseases of the mouth and maxillofacial region. Some of the diseases that Dr. Jia Y. Lee, DDS, diagnoses include mouth and throat cancer, mumps, salivary gland disorders, ulcers, and more.  During your routine dental appointment, Dr. Jia Y. Lee, DDS will examine your cheeks, tongue, and gums, in addition to your teeth. This will help diagnose any causes for concern such as sores in the mouth, abscesses, or more. Oral pathology screening, also known as oral cancer screening increases the chance of early detection when these issues are easiest to treat. If you notice a chronic sore throat, a lump or mass in the neck, or red patches in the mouth, contact us immediately to discuss treatment options. If you have questions or concerns regarding oral cancer or oral cancer screening, please give us a call. T

Bridges

When people need new dental crowns, Dr. Jia Y. Lee’s Rancho Cucamonga office can’t be beaten for convenience. Our CEREC technology allows us to mill crowns in a single appointment, sparing patients from needing to wait for their replacement teeth. This is particularly useful for people who need dental bridges to replace multiple teeth. Bridges are a series of crowns linked together. They would usually be used for patients who need several teeth replaced. In order to prepare patients for a bridge, two of their teeth would have to be reshaped so that the crowns at either end of the bridge would fit over them. For this reason, dentists were historically reluctant to use bridges on people who only needed a few teeth replaced. However, modern bridges can be made as dentures that skirt healthy teeth. If a tooth is lost, replacing its crown helps to maintain jaw stability. But there is a greater benefit to replacing the root, as well. Bridges do not always need to be supported by natural teet
