Sjögren’s Syndrome

Patients should never be embarrassed to seek help at the Rancho Cucamonga dental office of Dr. Jia Lee. We recognize that our patients struggle with many oral health challenges, including Sjögren’s Syndrome. People with this condition are at higher risk for gingivitis and tooth decay, so we want them to know what to expect.

Autoimmune disorders often cause inflammation, including gingivitis. Sjögren’s Syndrome is distinct in that it causes dryness of the tear and saliva glands, although it often occurs along with other autoimmune disorders, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. When people lack saliva, it is easier for food debris to build up in their mouths and fuel bacterial infections. The pH level of their mouths also changes, allowing bacteria and fungus to grow there more easily.

It is unknown what causes Sjögren’s Syndrome, although middle-aged women are the most at risk for it. Testing for Sjögren’s Syndrome requires a biopsy of the patient’s saliva glands to be taken, which is done by plucking a few from the inside of the lower lip. If the tests come back positive, we can assist patients with selecting moisturizers to compensate for dry mouth.
